Life skills nobody explained. Explained.
You're an adult now, apparently. Basic ASF gives you the exact steps for the stuff nobody sat you down for: laundry that doesn't shrink, eggs that come out right, drains that drain.
Today's to-do list
-
How to do laundry without ruining anything
Read the care label, sort by colour and fabric weight, wash most everyday clothes at 30 to 40°C on a normal cycle with the dose of detergent the pack recommends, and only tumble dry what the label allows. Heat is what shrinks and fades clothes, so when in doubt, go colder.
-
How to boil an egg (soft, jammy, or hard)
Lower fridge-cold eggs into water that is already at a rolling boil, turn it down to a steady simmer, and time it - about 6 minutes for soft, 7 to 8 for jammy, and 10 to 12 for hard. Then move them straight into cold or iced water to stop the cooking.
-
How to unclog a drain without wrecking the pipes
Start mechanical, not chemical. Pull out and clean the stopper, plunge with a cup plunger while blocking the overflow, then use a cheap plastic drain snake or clean the U-shaped trap under the sink. Avoid mixing chemical drain cleaners, and call a plumber if several drains are slow at once.
What does that symbol even mean?
The tag on your hoodie is a tiny comic strip. Here are six you'll see all the time.
- Machine wash, warm (40°C)
- Do not bleach
- Tumble dry, low heat
- Dry flat
- Iron, medium (150°C)
- Professional dry clean (P)
